Hans Hofmann was a German born American abstract expressionist who lived from 1880 to 1966. Here is something he had to say about the work of artists:
“The artist's technical problem is how to transform the material with which he works back into the sphere of the spirit.”
This is what I am working towards with my cow collages. When I work in the abstract expressionist manner I feel freer to let loose with my feelings than when I am working representationally. I am striving to transfer that freedom of expression to my representational cattle work. Sometimes I feel I am close to doing so. Here is a sample of that freedom beginning.
