"Hereford in Chute" is a charcoal drawing of an animal I met at the Royal Winter Fair in 1998, I painted a traditional watercolour of her at the time and have revisited her in this drawing. The watercolour painting was accepted at The Lindsay Juried Art Show, juried by Peter Kolisnyk. Peter commented that he was intrigued by the cow's purpose in being tied up. He liked that the viewer does not know the reason the cow is tied. She is, in fact, being groomed for show. In drawing this version, I thought about Peter's comments and tried to emphasize that ambiguity of purpose. It is unframed and measures approx. 11" x 15"

"Charolais Bull II" is a charcoal drawing of one of my favourite subjects, a bull that field boarded locally and was the sire of one of my cow's calves. The drawing is done on smooth drawing paper with charcoal dust and pencils. I've used minimal coloured chalk pastel in areas. It is currently unframed and measures approx. 15" x 11".

The image measures approx. 12"x9" and the frame is an almost black contemporary wood molding. The top mat of the double acid free mats has an incised v-groove.

"By the Barn" is an original mixed media measuring approx. 15"x11" and is available with double acid free mats.
The lovely black cow pictured is a Highland from a fold (the term for a herd of that breed) in Burnt River, Ontario. I was attracted to her on this crisp, sunny winter day as she stood by her barn, her breath making steam as she exhaled.

"Dining Alone" is a transparent watercolour painting measuring approx. 22"x15". It is ready to hang in a green wood frame with double acid free mats.
This heifer is typical for an animal found in a mixed herd on the farms in Ontario. Judging from her body colour, markings and white face, she is likely a Hereford crossed with Simmental with maybe a bit of Shorthorn thrown in for good measure. I know the rest of her herd and these mixes seem most likely.
The metal feeder is also the type seen often on our farms. I like the story this young animal tells as she stands beside this great mound of hay....all by herself and happy not to have to share.

"Charolais Calf" is a mixed media painting measuring approx. 15"x11". It is stunning in a deep brown Italian frame with double acid free mats.
The calf portrayed is a young animal who I met in a field near Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Cattle are curious and are always on the lookout for people with grain hidden on their beings. I expect that was the intrigue that brought this calf close to me.
The black medium in this painting, and in "Crumpet I" (below) is charcoal dust. I have developed a technique I call "smoking" to apply the dust over watercolour. The effect is dramatic and showcases the subject by eliminating extraneous details of the environment. As well, it evokes a sense of mystery which reflects the questioning attitude of the cattle themselves.

"Crumpet l" is a mixed media painting measuring 7"x5". It is offered for sale in nearly black wood frame with double acid free mats.
Crumpet is an orphan Charolais calf that I am hand raising. She was born on 4 June, 2013. This painting shows Crumpet at approximately two and a half weeks of age. I wanted to show the innocence and vulnerability of this young heifer calf.
Happily, SOLD

"Crumpet Running" is a mixed media painting measuring approx. 10"x 7". It is currently matted with double mats and foam core backing. All you need to do is add the frame of your choice and glass.
This image is inspiring because it shows Crumpet running for the first time in her paddock and she was nearly blind. Crumpet was born with cataracts and they cleared somewhat in the first two months of her life. At the time of this painting she could see shadows, light and movement. It was amazing to see the confidence that she had navigating her environment. If you look closely you will also see that she was mooing!

"Charolais Bull" is a mixed media painting measuring approx. 15"x11". It is framed in a sleek black contemporary style frame with double acid free mats. This bold image is the first painting in which I used my smoking technique. I love the strong value contrast that focuses the viewer's eye on this noble animal. The gaze of the bull at the viewer is the same gaze he would give intruders in his field.
